HALF-DAY PETROPOLIS TOUR Petropolis is a
charming mountain resort to the west of Rio. The scenic drive takes you
through the Organ Mountains to this favorite retreat of Dom Pedro I, Emperor
of Brazil in the late 17th century. Located at about 3,000 feet above
sea level, it took the Emperor two days to transfer his entire court via
mule-train to this palace, where he would retreat during the summer months
to escape the heat of Rio, but you will make it in two hours, and in even
less time on the return. Visit the Cathedral, Goat Square and the Imperial
Palace, now a museum, where the crown jewels are on display.
