FULL-DAY CARARA BIOLOGICAL RESERVE TOUR WITH LUNCH Take a full-day
tour of Carara Biological Reserve. Carara covers a low mountainous area
of 4,700 ha. in a transitional climatic zone between the dry Pacific north
and humid coastal south. This dry rainforest, though rich in vegetation,
is relatively clear of undergrowth, which makes it easy to observe its
abundant wildlife. Watch for some of the more visible birds: macaws, parrots,
guans, toucans, trogons, flycatchers, kingfishers, and hummingbirds. Try
also to catch sight of the howler, white face, spider, and squirrel monkeys,
which can be easily observed. Among the cats, however, the jaguar, puma,
ocelot, jaguarondi, and margay are rather difficult to see. So, look carefully,
and also keep an eye out for more diurnal animals such as: coatis, sloths,
agouitis, deer, peccaries, porcupines, anteaters, coyotes, and armadillos.
Watch for common reptiles and amphibians, as well, such as: crocodiles,
iguanas, lizards, frogs, and toads. You will spend approximately three
hours exploring the trails under a canopy of giant trees. (L)
