Chichicastenango
is noted for its open-air market
|
Discover
the charm of colonial Guatemala on this 5-day travel
agents fam trip to Guatemala City and Antigua. Enjoy
a boat trip on beautiful Lake Atitlan, and find
shopping bargains galore at the world-famous Chicastenango
market.
Chicastenango
is noted for its open-air market on Thursdays and
Sundays, where
colorful native handicrafts of the region are traded.
This is also the site of 400-year-old Santo Tomas
Church, where to this day Catholic and Pagan rites
are blended. Lake Atitlan is a mile-high spectacularly
beautiful lake set among volcano peaks and surrounded
by 12 Indian villages named after the 12 apostles.
Antigua,
former Spanish colonial capital city of the Central
American viceroyalty, was founded in 1543. Though partially
destroyed by the 1773 earthquake, it still preserves
its colonial character with ornate churches, convents
and Spanish-style homes. It is also home to some of
the best quality arts and crafts in the country
a "must see" on any trip to Guatemala.
