Day by Day Itinerary
Day Eight, Thursday - Otavalo Indian Market
Tour
Depart
early in the morning for a full-day excursion to the famous Otavalo market
north of Quito. First descend into the spectacular Guayllabamba Gorge,
then climb out into the fertile Guayllabamba Valley. Finally, arrive in
Otavalo to find the market bustling. Otavalo Indians are an aristocratic
society and highly skilled weavers. Otavalo, often called the Persia of
South America, has one large square that is a shopper's paradise of woolen
rugs, wall hangings, and knit and embroidered clothing. Otavaleños
sell their goods throughout Ecuador, but you will find the best selection
and prices here. Have lunch at a charming hacienda, and then return to
Quito. En route, stop at the wood carvers' village of San Antonio de Ibarra
and at the bread doll factories at Calderon for more unusual shopping
opportunities. (B, L)
Day Nine, Friday: Quito to Kapawi Jungle
Lodge
You will be picked up this morning at your hotel
and transferred to the airport for check-in for your flight to Macas.
Upon arrival at Macas, you are met by a representative of Kapawi Lodge
for the thirty-minute air transfer to Sharamentza. Then you journey down
the Pastaza River through dense virgin forest. As you cross the Kapawi
Lagoon, the twenty oval shaped cottages dot the lake's edge; each has
a private bath with sun-heated showers. Your guide will explain the details
of your daily activities. (B, L, D)
A History of the Lodge
Kapawi Ecological Reserve is a unique creation
derived from the cooperation between native Achuar Indian Communities
and an experienced Ecuadorian travel association. Their goal is to preserve
the rainforest and the Achuar culture and language, while revealing this
fascinating biology and culture to the discerning traveler.
The
project began in 1993 when Daniel Coupermann, an ecotourism manager with
a background in the Achuar Territory, won the approval of OINAE (Organization
of Ecuadorian Achuar Nationalities), and then convinced a well-known tour
operator to build a lodge and research center in Kapawi in the heart of
Achuar Territory. The goal was to pioneer a new trend in ecotourism, in
partnership with the Achuar people, by providing a means of economic support
and jobs. By 2010 all installations will belong entirely to the Achuar.
Accommodations:
Each oval cottage has a private bath with sun-heated
shower, photovoltaic electricity and a wide terrace to observe the prodigious
bird life. The lounge offers a panorama of the rainforest, and an unlimited
supply of soft drinks, snacks and hot water for coffee or tea.
Days
Ten & Eleven, Saturday & Sunday: At Kapawi Lodge
Days at leisure at the lodge. Enjoy activities
such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, bird-watching, as well as
visits to local communities. Each venture into the rainforest is accompanied
by an English-speaking naturalist plus an Achuar native who can explain
the practical and medicinal use of every plant and tree. Treks are up
to three hours on well-defined trails; for the more energetic, longer
hikes on primitive tracks are available. (B, L, D daily)
Day Twelve, Monday - Kapawi to Quito
After breakfast and a morning excursion, you
will begin your journey back to Quito. Transfer to the JW Marriott Hotel.
(B)
Day Thirteen, Tuesday Homeward bound
Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
