Monteverde Cloud Forest

The Monteverde Cloud Forest and nearby Santa Elena Reserve, at an altitude of over 4000 feet, support six distinct ecological communities of plants and animals with over 2000 plant species and more than 320 species of birds. Monteverde is home to the resplendent Quetzal, with its metallic green feathers and golden highlights, to the Golden Toad, unique to this area, and to a myriad of breathtakingly beautiful butterflies.

Straddling the Continental Divide at 1440 meters (4662 feet), the Santa Elena and Monteverde Cloud Forest area offers one of the most interesting places to visit in Costa Rica.

In Costa Rica's Monteverde rainforest are found more than 100 species of mammals including five species of cats, over 400 species of birds including 30 kinds of hummingbirds, tens of thousands of insect species (over 5000 species of moths) and 2500 species of plants, including 420 kinds of orchids. The area is acclaimed as one of the most outstanding wildlife refuges in the New World Tropics.

Sapo Dorado Sapo Dorado is a cozy property sitting on a hill with spectacular views of the Gulf of Nicoya. The Fountain Chalets are comfortable two-room mountain cabins with private bathrooms with hot water, a master bedroom and a sleeping/living area. There are ten Sunset Chalets with private bathrooms with hot water, two queen-size beds, and terraces with sweeping views of the Golf of Nicoya. They are the furthest from the main lodge, at top of the hill. The main lodge offers a restaurant, bar, massage service, and conference room.

El Establo El Establo Hotel is located in the heart of the tourist area of Monteverde. It is the only hotel in Monteverde that has a swimming pool with a view of the Gulf of Nicoya.
